A preterm infant with early Bacteroides fragilis meningitis and bilateral subdural empyema: Literature review and treatment options

Abstract. We report a case on a low birth weight infant who developed early onset meningitis with bilateral occipital empyema. The pathogen isolated from the cerebral spinal fluid was Bacteroides fragilis, an anaerobic Gram negative bacillus of the gut, rarely reported as an etiology of neonatal meningitis.
